Historical or biographical fragments from the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth centuries are now extraordinarily interesting, both because of the striking similarities as well as the even greater differences between those centuries and our own. This first volume will be followed by a second, and perhaps also a third. No matter where I choose to leave off, I shall certainly leave behind much more material for my successors than I have the time or patience to process myself.
