A circular emblem or bookplate is pasted onto the center of the page. The central scene is an oval containing a white pelican in her piety. She plucks her breast to feed her young while perched atop a silver crescent moon. Above the pelican, golden rays of light descend from the top of the oval. Below the moon sits a white square or cube. It features four red roses arranged in a cross pattern. The oval is set against a blue background and framed by a green border. A circular inscription in pale yellow or gold capital letters surrounds this central oval.
original: "Philosophia Hermetica". This refers to a tradition of spiritual, alchemical, and occult knowledge attributed to the mythical figure Hermes Trismegistus. In this context, it suggests a mystical path to understanding God and nature.
The Pelican in her Piety is a traditional Christian symbol for self-sacrifice and the Eucharist. It depicts the mother bird feeding her young with her own blood. In alchemical circles, it also represents the stage of "multiplication" or the refinement of the soul. The Rose Cross on the cube below is a hallmark of Rosicrucian symbolism, representing the union of the spiritual and the material.
