O, when the Soul can say with experience, I seek you with my whole heart, then Jesus, the King of the heart, will say back to the soul: You are my Friends.
When a Soul is led into the inner chambers of Jesus, and she on her part begins to behold his beauty, loveliness, and outstanding love, and on the other side her own vileness and misery, then the soul begins to step upon the first stair to that High School original: "Hooge-Schoole" — in this period, the term referred to a university or a place of advanced spiritual instruction, where Jesus, that great Professor, is alone the only Teacher. And when she then is instructed by that great Teacher, she begins to cry out: O Lord, you speak as one having authority, and not as the scribes original: "Schriftgeleerde" — a reference to Matthew 7:29, contrasting the direct power of Christ's words with the legalistic teaching of the scholars, and she considers the wisdom of the world to be nothing but sheer foolishness compared to the wisdom of Jesus.
