Ripley Scroll (MS. Bodl. Rolls 1)
Only antiquated translations exist. This is the first modern English translation.
The Ripley Scroll is a composite alchemical work consisting of both visual imagery and Middle English verse. As the original text is already in Middle English, it does not require translation into modern English in the traditional sense. However, because the language is archaic and often obscure, modern scholarly editions (such as those by Anke Timmermann) provide transcriptions, critical apparatus, and commentary that function as a modern 'translation' or interpretation for contemporary readers. Since the work is already in English, it is not a 'first translation' from Latin, but rather a work that has been continuously available in its original language.
