Human souls are of two kinds: —
(a) Born in the Work-Region. original: Karma-bhumi These souls have to work and to earn their livelihood by following different vocations, such as military, literary, agricultural, and commercial.
(b) Born in the Enjoyment-Region. original: Bhoga-bhumi These souls live in a condition of life where there is only enjoyment, without any work, business, or effort.
Hellish Souls. These souls must stay in one or another of the seven nether regions, according to the effect of their evil Karmas karma: the fine matter attracted to the soul by its actions, which determines future rebirths. They always possess very negative thought-paint lesya: the spiritual color or aura reflecting the soul's emotional state, sense perception, and transformation. There is no enjoyment or pleasure at all. (See Manual for Understanding Reality original: Tatwarthadhigama Sutra, the Sacred Books of the Jainas, Volume II Chapter III, Verses 1 to 6).
Sub-human Souls. Excepting the Human, the Hellish, and the Celestial souls, all others—from the one-sensed to the five-sensed living beings—are called sub-human souls or Sub-human original: Tiryancha.
They are called Sub-human original: Tiryancha, from the word Crooked original: Tiryak, because they adopt crooked thought activities. They are in a very low position regarding their body, enjoyment, etc., have little knowledge, and have various grave demerits. The fourteen kinds of Sub-human Souls referred to in Verse 17 original: Gatha 17 are as follows: —
(1) Subtle One-sensed ... }
(2) Gross One-sensed .. } Each of these seven may be
(3) Gross Two-sensed . } (1) Developable or
(4) Gross Three-sensed .. } (2) Non-developable,
(5) Gross Four-sensed ... } and they are thus divided
(6) Irrational five-sensed ... } into 14 groups
(7) Rational five-sensed .. }
(See Essence of Doctrine: Soul Section original: Gommatsára Jiva Kánda by Mr. J. L. Jaini, Chapter II, Verse 72).
Celestial Souls or Gods. They are called Gods original: Deva, from the root To Shine original: Div, because they always amuse themselves with their heavenly acquisitions and have a shining heavenly constitution, which is technically called the Fluid Body vaikriyika sharira: a subtle body capable of changing shape and size at will.
These celestial bodies can assume any form they like. Their body has no flesh, blood, or bone; there are no filthy excretions from it, and it is lustrous.
These beings form four groups: —
(a) Residential original: Bhawan Vási.
(b) Peripatetic original: Vyantara.
(c) Stellar original: Jyotishká.
(d) Heavenly original: Vaimánika.
