Mañjuśrī said to the Buddha: "The realm of Naraka is equal to empty space."

The Buddha said: "Mañjuśrī, what do you think? Mañjuśrī replied to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, the time of Naraka arises from the various karmic conditions of sentient beings, manifesting from their own minds. World-Honored One, these sentient beings are obscured by the darkness of ignorance and folly. Because of their discriminatory delusions, they fail to realize that these are merely shadows of their own minds—illusory and false. Thus, they see the existence of hells, hungry ghosts, and animals."

In the arising [of these states], there is not even a single thought of increase or decrease. One should comfort oneself and not give rise to alarm or fear. When a person hears this, they begin to reflect and awaken, returning to the realization of their original mind. They understand that there is no reality within those [realms]; rather, it is one's own inverted and delusional thoughts Inverted and delusional thoughts: Mental distortions that cause one to see the world incorrectly, like mistaking a rope for a snake. original: "顛倒妄想" that see such things.

Once these [delusions] are gone, all terror is suddenly eliminated. Being confused and disordered by delusional thoughts, they give rise directly to craving and attachment toward all sensory objects, thereby binding themselves.

Furthermore, they do not understand that the notions of 'male' and 'female' are illusory transformations—deceptive and false. Within these, they give rise to mutual defilement and attachment. In every moment, they create immeasurable defilements original: "染汗" and unwholesome karma of body, speech, and mind. And yet, within this, they continue to distinguish between male and female, becoming obsessed with and attached to them, producing the appearance of permanent pleasure.
