original: 新編直指算法統宗 (Xīnbiān Zhízhǐ Suànfǎ Tǒngzōng). This title indicates a "direct" or straightforward approach to teaching the "systematic" or foundational principles of arithmetic.
This work, published in 1592, became the most influential mathematical text of the Ming Dynasty. It moved away from the complex "counting rod" methods of earlier centuries, focusing instead on the practical use of the suanpan (Chinese abacus). Its clear instructions made it the standard manual for merchants, scholars, and officials for over three centuries.
