original title: "新編直指算法統宗" (Xīnbiān Zhízhǐ Suànfǎ Tǒngzōng). This work, authored by Cheng Dawei in 1592, became the most influential book on mathematics and the use of the abacus in East Asia for centuries.
Computational Methods (算法, Suanfa): Refers to the science of calculation. In this period, it focused heavily on practical applications like commerce, land measurement, and taxation, often utilizing the suanpan or Chinese abacus.
Systematic Guide (統宗, Tongzong): A term suggesting a "unified lineage" or a definitive collection. It indicates that the author has synthesized various historical mathematical methods into one authoritative system.
The label is printed in bold calligraphic characters and pasted onto a dark indigo-dyed paper cover, a hallmark of high-quality book production in the late imperial period.
