original: "海國圖志" (Haiguo Tuzhi). This monumental work was compiled by the scholar-official Wei Yuan (1794–1857) during the Qing Dynasty. Following China's defeat in the First Opium War, Wei Yuan expanded upon the research of Lin Zexu to create this comprehensive guide to Western geography, history, and military technology. His stated goal was to "learn the superior techniques of the foreigners in order to control them."
