original title: "海國圖志" (Haiguo Tuzhi). Compiled by the scholar-official Wei Yuan in the 1840s and 50s, this work is one of the most significant 19th-century Chinese texts on world geography. It was written in response to the First Opium War to help China understand the Western powers.
