The East is the region where the energies of Heaven and Earth begin to generate. It is a land of fish and salt, bordering the sea and water. Its people eat fish and crave salt; they are content in their homes and enjoy their food. However, fish causes internal heat, and salt exhausts the blood. Therefore, the people there tend to have dark complexions and loose skin textures. Their illnesses are mostly sores and abscesses yongyang: various types of skin ulcers or swellings. The appropriate treatment for them is stone needles bianshi: ancient stone tools used for bloodletting or lancing abscesses, considered the precursor to metal acupuncture needles. Thus, stone needles originated from the East.
The West is a region of gold and jade, a place of sand and stones, where the energies of Heaven and Earth are gathered and pulled inward. Its people live in the hills and experience much wind; the water and soil are hard and strong. The people do not wear fine silks but rather coarse cloth and mats. They eat rich, fatty foods, so external 'evils' pathogens like wind or cold cannot easily harm their physical bodies. Their diseases arise from within. The appropriate treatment for them is potent herbal decoctions duyao: literally 'poisonous drugs,' referring to strong medicinal formulas intended to purge the body of internal stagnation. Thus, these potent medicines also originated from the West.
