...however, I have added the symbols original: "sigla". These refer to the astronomical or shorthand signs mentioned on the previous page. inscribed on the stone tablet together with Du Cange's notes at the end of this book.
Finally, to provide for the readers' convenience, I have added a very extensive index. In preparing it, although I primarily focused on the subjects found in the small book, I also took into account the critical annotations, following especially the method used by Hase Karl Benedict Hase (1780–1864), a scholar who published an edition of Lydus in 1823. in the index for the book On Signs original: "De Ostentis", a 6th-century Byzantine work by Johannes Lydus about omens and divination..
As for the rest, I hope the physical appearance of this small book will displease no one; for nothing was overlooked, neither by the most honorable publisher nor by the one who corrected the proof sheets original: "plagulas a prelo madentes", literally "sheets wet from the press." In the hand-press era, paper was dampened before printing to better absorb ink., L. Chr. Zimmermann Ludwig Christian Zimmermann (1780–1853), a classical scholar and educator., a most learned and distinguished man and highly deserving Co-rector of the Darmstadt Gymnasium, to whom I must express my thanks in this place. He spared no effort regarding the book's brilliance and elegance.
If, besides a very few typographical errors which I have indicated at the end, accents are missing in some copies, the reason for this is nothing other than the condition of the type original: "typorum". The physical lead pieces used for printing., which sometimes gave way under the heavy pressure of the press, in such a way that the accents were separated from their letters and therefore were not printed.
So much for this. Now, kind reader, make use of my work, and if anything in this edition of Lydus falls short of your expectations, please take it in good part.
