alone. And she did not mingle with anyone with gentle words;

but when she had filled the large high places with men,
she would then threaten them, rebuking their wickedness,
and said she would no longer come when called.
"What a generation the golden fathers left behind,
worse than themselves; and you will beget worse ones.

And indeed, there will be wars, and indeed, hateful blood
will be among men, and pain will lie upon the wicked."
Speaking thus, she reached for the mountains, and she left the people
all still looking toward her.
But when they too had died, and those who were born,
130

the bronze race, men more destructive than their predecessors,
who first forged the evil-working sword
of the highway, and first tasted the plowing oxen,
then Dike, hating the race of those men,
flew up to the heavens; and she settled in that region
135

where she still appears at night to men,
Virgo, being near the much-observed Bootes.
Above both of her shoulders revolves a star
on her right wing; it is called the Protrygeter Vintage-gatherer;
so great in size, and with such light resting within it.
