The Commentary of Hierocles upon the Golden Verses of Pythagoras

translation is accurately compared with the Greek, diligently revised, and almost new modeled. The ambiguous expressions are rendered clear, and a new turn given to many of the sentences, in a more plain and easy manner, and, as we apprehend, more agreeable to the original. Where the text was obscure, and scarce intelligible, occasioned by an allusion to some of the Pythagorean followers of the philosopher Pythagoras tenets, not now so well understood, we have endeavoured to illustrate it, in a few words, agreeable to the principles of that philosophy, as in pages 33 and 34. — In short, that nothing might be wanting to complete this edition, we have analized the whole of Hierocles's sentiments in a GENERAL INDEX; so that the reader may have a view of his whole philosophy at once. On these accounts, we flatter ourselves that this translation is preferable to any former one, and, we hope, will be received by the public accordingly.
