A detailed 16th-century nautical chart, or portolan-style map, displays the coast of West and South Africa, extending across the South Atlantic Ocean toward Brazil. The map features three large compass roses, several galleons, a sea monster, and elaborate strapwork cartouches. At the bottom, an ornamental frame presents landscape profiles of the islands of Ascension and Saint Helena. Rhumb lines overlay the ocean surface.
An ornate scale bar in the upper left corner is decorated with a pair of dividers held by a hand emerging from a cloud.
A large decorative cartouche on the right side of the ocean area contains a bilingual title in Latin and Dutch, surmounted by a coat of arms with five shields (the Portuguese quinas) and flanked by two figures holding navigational instruments.
A model of the maritime coasts of Guinea, Manicongo, and Angola, beyond the Cape of Good Hope, with all harbors, islands, reefs, sandbanks, and shallows, and the true width of the Ethiopian Ocean from east to west towards Pernambuco and the Cape of Saint Augustine on the Brazilian coast. Included are the islands of the same ocean, especially those of Saint Thomas, Saint Helena, the Island of Ascension, and many others, with their genuine paths. Everything is accurately taken and corrected from the best Indian hydrographic charts.
