more contracted; the latter is wider and more splendid in speaking and ornamenting; the former is content to teach and to create belief in a doubtful matter; the latter, besides belief, employs also the movement of the emotions. For both concern all things that can fall into a dispute, proposed things, and all questions, simple and composite, finite and infinite (of which, however, the finite belong more to the rhetoricians; the infinite indeed to the dialecticians). Which is not to be taken as if we were saying that the matter and all knowledge of things is handed down by the dialecticians, which it is agreed must be sought from those disciplines to which those questions belong; but that the method and way of explaining and treating each thing is prescribed: just as neither the Arithmetic teacher hands down the method of finding money, but of counting; nor the Geometer, the method of finding fields, but of measuring.
The duty of the dialectician.
For Dialectics teaches that every proof must be drawn from definition, genus, whole, parts, causes, effects, and other places; however, the other arts will supply the definition itself, genus, species, and the remaining places. As if one asks what an earthquake is, what a line is, what an apsis a curve/arch is, what a parallel is, what baptism is, what sacrilege is, what pleurisy is: the professors of those arts to which these themes belong will explain: the physicist, geometer, astronomer, cosmographer, theologian, jurist, physician: who, however, all borrowing this general method of proving from the dialecticians, each explains the questions of his own doctrine. For example: An earthquake is an agitation or shaking by which the earth is moved by vapors.
