For it will add no small spur to the entire youth if they see the children of heroes dedicated to studies from their earliest years, and running in the same race as themselves. Now, the task of forming boyhood consists of many parts: of which the first, as it is the primary one, is that the tender mind should drink in the seeds of piety; the next, that it should both love and learn the liberal disciplines; the third, that it should be instructed in the duties of life; the fourth, that it should become accustomed to the civility of manners from the very first rudiments of age. I have now taken this last part for myself specifically. For concerning the former parts, both many others and we ourselves have written a great deal.
