warn, entreat, and exhort, and nonetheless, by virtue of holy obedience and for the increase of eternal rewards, we earnestly command you that you cordially reveal this our letter to the clergy and your people in our name, and that you keep the feast of this venerable saint with due solemnity, and cause it to be kept: and that you humbly pray to Almighty God, from whom holy desires, good counsel, and righteous works proceed, with your whole heart, that through the intercession and merits of the same saint, He might soften [hearts] and grant peace to His servants, which the world cannot give, so that our hearts may be devoted to His commandments, the fear of the enemy taken away, and our times may be peaceful under His protection: and that He may grant us that after the completed service of our stewardship, together with the flock entrusted to us, we may reach eternal joys. We gladly comply with the requests of noble princes, especially those who are devoted to God and the Roman Church, and therein show particularly favorable grace when it is found that it serves to the strengthening of the true faith, the purification of the consciences of Christ's faithful, and otherwise to the increase of the Christian religion. Accordingly, some time ago, the late Boniface IX, in his obedience—over which there was a schism referring to the Western Schism where there were multiple claimants to the Papacy, and he at that time was pronounced [Pope]—concerning the origin, life, and customs, and other manifold godly, holy, and virtuous works, as well as the wonders, expressed primarily at that time, which the blessed God worked as a reward for the holiness of the blessed widow Birgitt, whom the common people called Brigida, as they still do, both during her life and after her blessed dissolution, against and above the forces of nature, and revealed to the world, and had not ceased to work; through that which one had from the command of Gregory XI, our predecessor, and the late Urban VI, in the mentioned obedience, who immediately preceded Boniface therein, through capable witnesses and other
lawful proofs thereof, he was certainly informed: and on account of Margaret, of honorable memory, Queen in Sweden, and the prelates and nobles of her kingdom, as well as the beloved sons of the people and the officials of the holy city of Rome, and many other Christian faithful, often and insistently sought for the honor of Almighty God the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and for the exaltation of the true faith, and the increase of the Christian religion, as well as for the stilled schism, which at that time flourished, and the unification of the faith and the Church, by the power of God the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and his court, recognized, declared, resolved, or pronounced that the aforementioned Birgitt is holy, and shall be honored as holy by the universal Church, and shall be written into the number of the saints, and did write her therein, ordaining that by the universal Church annually on the day when she, after conquering and triumphing over the world, was born from the present life into everlasting eternity, namely the 23rd of July original: Hewmonats, her feast and the divine service as for a saint who is neither a virgin nor a martyr, should be kept devoutly and cordially: and so that at her venerable grave the multitude of Christian faithful might come together the more eagerly and frequently, and the feast day of the same saint be celebrated more magnificently, and her name be honored more often, by the aforementioned power [he] graciously remitted seven years and as many quadragenes forty-day periods of their imposed penances to all those who truly repent, confess, and devoutly visit her grave at the monastery at Vadstena original: Wassteen of the Order of St. Augustine, called St. Savior's, in the diocese of Linköping, founded by the mentioned Birgitt, on the feast of the same, as well as on the 25th of May, on which day the venerable body of the same Birgitt was brought into the same monastery, and on the next following days, annually on each of the same days on which they shall visit the mentioned grave, as is aforesaid; as is then more fully contained in the Bull an official papal document executed concerning this by the mentioned Boniface, the content of which we have caused to be inserted here word for word; so we have been humbly requested on account of our beloved son in Christ, Eric, the most illustrious King in Sweden, who says for certain that he bears a special devotion thereto, that, because through God's goodness the aforementioned schism is now stilled, and the mentioned St. Birgitt is honored in the aforementioned kingdoms from which she took her origin, and other surrounding kingdoms and lands, primarily and commonly more than in other places, to the praise of the divine name, and
