Only partial translations or excerpts exist. This is the first complete English translation.
While Wei Yuan's 'Haiguo Tuzhi' is a seminal work in modern Chinese history and has been extensively studied, no complete English translation of the entire 50, 60, or 100-scroll work exists. Significant partial translations and excerpts are found in academic monographs, most notably Jane Kate Leonard's 1984 study, which provides translations of key sections related to the maritime world, and in standard anthologies like 'Sources of Chinese Tradition'. However, a full translation of the 1844 edition or its individual volumes (such as Volume 9/Scroll 17) has not been published as a standalone work.

Step into the mind of a 19th-century Chinese visionary as he demystifies the secretive 'warrior nation' of Japan and the uncharted islands of Oceania. Wei Yuan’s 'Illustrated Treatise on the Maritime Kingdoms' tackles a world in flux: How did Japan maintain its fierce isolation while the West began its relentless expansion? Readers will discover a rare, ethnographic perspective on samurai honor, ritual suicide, and the treacherous naval routes of the South Seas.
