Original fileAnonymous (Mughal, court of Akbar)
This leaf from the Tuti-nama (Tales of a Parrot) features a stylized, symmetrical garden scene dominated by a dark pool containing pink lotus blossoms. The pool is framed by a low brick wall and flanked by lush, decorative trees and shrubs, typical of early Mughal miniature painting. Above the image, several lines of Nasta'liq Persian script provide the narrative context for the moralizing tale depicted.
The Tuti-nama is a crucial Persian-to-Hindi literary bridge that synthesizes moral philosophy, Sufi-inflected wisdom, and courtly didacticism. It functions as a mirror for princes, using animal fables to convey ethical instruction within an Islamic courtly framework.
Translation
Love was repeated much; she kissed the hand of the master of the house, and he, in safety, went to every house of his. The vizier said: 'I told this story so that it would be hidden from your Exalted Opinion that women have deceit under every expression and treachery under every gesture; their speech should not be listened to, and their words should not be obeyed.' Upon listening to this story, the King's anger subsided and the effects of his wrath diminished. He ordered that the son be taken to prison [text cut off]. [Verse couplet] On the second day, when the sun-like maiden unveiled her face and showed generosity, The slave girl showed generosity to the King, gave [an audience/request] and pleaded.
