These engraved book pages display parallel columns of Syriac text alongside large Chinese characters, accompanied by Latin marginalia. The layout reflects a 17th-century attempt at comparative linguistics, reproducing text from an 8th-century Christian monument discovered in Xi'an, China. The Syriac is written in a bold, calligraphic style while the Chinese characters are rendered as large, distinct woodcut-style blocks.

This work represents Athanasius Kircher's early efforts to bridge Western and Eastern traditions through 'universal' linguistics, arguing for a common root for all ancient scripts. It provided the European scholarly world with one of the first detailed looks at the Nestorian Stele, which Kircher used to argue that Christianity had a prehistoric presence in the Orient.
