The Hortus Deliciarum is one of the most significant encyclopedic manuscripts of the 12th-century Renaissance, representing the synthesis of theological, philosophical, and scientific knowledge available to women in the Middle Ages. It serves as a precursor to the later Renaissance impulse to categorize and map the entire cosmos and human history within a single visual and textual framework.
