The Virgin Mary is seated on the earth, presenting the swaddled Christ child, while Saint Joseph sits in quiet reflection to the right. A simple wooden structure shelters an ox and a donkey, set against a backdrop of stylized, rocky crags and a golden sky. In the upper right corner, an angelic messenger appears to shepherds on a distant hill.

Produced by a monk of the Camaldolese order, this work represents the contemplative mystical tradition of late 14th-century Florence. The use of gold leaf to represent uncreated divine light aligns with the Pseudo-Dionysian theology that would later influence Renaissance Neoplatonism.
