Original fileViewed through three massive Corinthian arches, the scene shows a sprawling banquet set against an idealized classical cityscape. Jesus sits at the center table surrounded by disciples, while the foreground and side arches are filled with servants, soldiers, a dwarf, and dogs. The print translates the grand scale and theatrical composition of Paolo Veronese's 1573 painting into the meticulous detail of Northern engraving.
This work represents the Haarlem Mannerists' project to reproduce the triumphs of the Italian Renaissance for a Northern intellectual audience. It preserves the composition that famously provoked a 1573 Inquisition trial over the artist's inclusion of 'buffoons, drunkards, Germans, dwarfs, and similar scurrilities' in a sacred scene, making it a landmark in the history of artistic freedom.
P. Veronese Inve. J. Saenredam sculp. C. Schonijus
Translation
Christ, the Supreme One, sent down from the citadel of heaven, Performs the office of the praised physician. He frequents the company and the throng of wicked men, And thinks that none are to be despised by Him. He comes hither, not that He might condemn anyone, but that He might save all With His blood, and with His own punishment. P. Veronese Inv. J. Saenredam sculp. C. Schonijus
Paolo Veronese
Jan Saenredam engraved this plate after Veronese's monumental painting, which was famously renamed from 'The Last Supper' to 'The Feast in the House of Levi' following an Inquisition trial.
Cornelis Schonaeus
The Latin verses at the base of the print were composed by Schonaeus, a Christian humanist and poet closely associated with the Haarlem engravers.
