The 'Haiguo Tuzhi' (Illustrated Treatise on the Maritime Kingdoms) is a massive 100-chapter encyclopedic work. While it is a seminal text in modern Chinese history, no complete English translation of the entire work exists. Scholarly studies such as Jane Kate Leonard's 1984 monograph provide extensive analysis and partial translations of key sections, and excerpts appear in standard sourcebooks, but the work as a whole remains untranslated in its entirety.

How can an ancient empire survive a modern naval onslaught? In this volume of his landmark work, Wei Yuan outlines a radical survival strategy for 19th-century China, advocating for the adoption of Western technology to defeat Western powers. It is a gripping look at a civilization forced to reinvent its military, education, and global outlook in the heat of the Opium Wars.
