Only partial translations or excerpts exist. This is the first complete English translation.
The core text of Gan Bao's 'Soushen Ji' (Records of the Search for Spirits) has been translated into English, most notably by DeWoskin and Crump (1996). However, the specific 1608 edition identified here is the 'Huitu Soushen Ji' (Illustrated and Augmented Records of the Search for Spirits), a Ming-dynasty expansion that includes significant additional material, such as lineages of the Three Teachings and popular deities, which is not present in the original Jin-dynasty text. As no complete English translation of this specific augmented 1608 edition exists, it qualifies as a first complete translation.
