Ekeghetsakan Patmutiwn (Ecclesiastical History - Armenian)
Socrates Scholasticus (trans. Philo of Tirak)
No prior complete English translation of this text has been found.
The 1897 edition of Socrates Scholasticus' 'Ecclesiastical History' (Ekeghets‘akan patmut‘iwn) represents the 'Longer' Armenian version of the text, traditionally attributed to Philo of Tirak. While the original Greek work has been translated into English many times (e.g., in the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers series), and Robert W. Thomson published an English translation of the 'Shorter' Armenian adaptation in 2001, there is no complete English translation of the specific 'Longer' Armenian text found in the 1897 Tiflis edition. As the Armenian version contains unique philological features and variations from the Greek, it constitutes a distinct source text that remains untranslated into English.

This work untangles the hidden evolution of Armenian ecclesiastical history by comparing the Great and Small versions of Socrates Scholasticus. Readers will discover how ancient manuscripts were not just repositories of faith, but living documents shaped by famine, politics, and the personal notes of weary scribes.
