Quadripartitum et Centiloquium
Claudius Ptolemy; Hali (commentary)
Only partial translations or excerpts exist. This is the first complete English translation.
While the core text of Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos has been translated into English several times (notably by Ashmand in 1822 and Robbins in 1940), these translations are based on the Greek original or Proclus's paraphrase. The 1484 Latin edition (the first printed edition of the work) contains the medieval Latin translation of the Tetrabiblos (Quadripartitum) accompanied by the extensive commentary of Haly Heben Rodan (Ali ibn Ridwan). While the shorter 'Centiloquium' and its commentary by Haly were translated into English in the 17th century by astrologers like Henry Coley (1676) and John Partridge (1679), the primary commentary by Haly on the four books of the Tetrabiblos itself remains untranslated in English. Therefore, a translation of this specific 1484 Latin volume constitutes the first complete English translation of this influential medieval astrological compilation.
