Wei Yuan's 'Haiguo Tuzhi' (Illustrated Gazetteer of the Maritime Kingdoms) is a massive 19th-century Chinese work that was never translated into English in its entirety. While significant excerpts and strategic sections (such as the prefaces and the 'General Principles') have been translated in scholarly sourcebooks and Jane Kate Leonard's 1984 monograph, no complete translation of the full work or specifically of Volume 3 (which covers Africa/Libya) exists in English. This edition represents the first complete translation of this specific volume.

Step into the mind of a 19th-century visionary as he redraws the map of the world. Wei Yuan's 'Haiguo Tuzhi' (Volume 3) is a breathtaking attempt to decode the mysteries of the West for the Qing Dynasty. What happens when a civilization's ancient worldview meets the rising powers of the Great Western Ocean?
